Best POS for buffet restaurants in 2026
A buffet sells two things a normal menu doesn't: a seat, priced per person by time of day and age, and sometimes food by the pound at a to-go bar. The first is a pricing-rule problem; the second needs a scale the register can read. Which vendors document scale support, and what they cost, is below.

Sell by weight: what each vendor documents
Square's support documentation describes two ways to connect a scale: Bluetooth to an iOS device or Square Stand, or USB to Square Stand, an Android device, Square Terminal, Square Handheld or Square Register, with items sold in grams, pounds or ounces and the price generated automatically from the weight.
Toast's support article "Use a Scale With Toast" names the Brecknell 6710U and CAS PD-II scales, says Toast can also scan GS1 variable-measure barcodes printed by any compliant scale, and describes a Prompt for Quantity setting that multiplies the read weight by the unit price when the item is selected.
Ginger prices buffet seating by rule, with per-person items for adult, child and time of day, and prints the count to the kitchen; integrated scale weighing is not a documented Ginger feature, so a buffet with a by-the-pound to-go bar should raise that with us before assuming it.

Where buffets lose money at the register
Miscounted heads. The single most common buffet leak is a table of five rung as four. The POS should make the count the first thing entered and print it on the kitchen and floor tickets so the server and the host reconcile against the same number.
Time-of-day pricing that flips late. Lunch price at 3:05 costs a dinner margin every day it happens. Pricing rules tied to the clock, not the cashier's memory, close that gap.
Card fees on large family checks. Buffet tickets are bigger than quick-service tickets, so the percentage matters more than the fixed fee. On a $90 family check, 2.6% + 15¢ is $2.49 and 2% + 5¢ is $1.85; across a busy month the difference pays a server's shift.

Why does the processing percentage matter more for a buffet than the fixed fee?
Because buffet checks are large. On a $90 family check, 2.6% + 15¢ comes to $2.49 while 2% + 5¢ comes to $1.85; the fixed fee is a rounding error and the percentage is the whole difference. The reverse is true at a coffee shop, where the fixed fee dominates a $5 sale.
