Best POS for cafes and coffee shops in 2026

Coffee is the small-ticket business, and small tickets punish fixed fees. On a $5 latte, the 15¢ in "2.6% + 15¢" is three percent on its own, so the effective rate is 5.6%, not 2.6%. The comparison below runs each vendor's published rate on a real cafe ticket rather than quoting the headline percentage.

Competitor figures come from each vendor's own pricing page or a dated 2026 review naming it; Ginger's from gingerserve.com/pricing. Checked September 2026. Prices change; treat this as a dated snapshot and confirm before signing.

What a $5 latte actually costs in card fees

Every rate below is the vendor's published in-person rate applied to a single $5 card sale. The fixed fee is what moves: at $5 a 15¢ fee is 3% of the ticket, a 10¢ fee is 2%, and a 5¢ fee is 1%.

Ginger's rate is interchange-plus, so it moves with the card mix; "as low as 2% + 5¢" is the floor, not a flat promise. The others are published flat rates.

Square's Free plan includes an online ordering page on every plan, per its published pricing. Toast's online ordering is a quote-based add-on. Ginger's is built in with the $1 per-order fee paid by the guest.

What a cafe needs beyond the rate

Speed at the register. A morning line moves on taps per order, and a drink with size, milk, syrup and temperature is four modifier groups in a row. The modifier flow should finish a custom latte in the time it takes to say it.

Tipping on screen. Square and Toast both prompt for tips on the customer-facing display; on Ginger the card terminal handles the prompt. What matters for a cafe is that the prompt appears before the receipt, not after.

Online and mobile pickup. Coffee is increasingly ordered ahead. Square includes an ordering page on its Free plan; Ginger's ordering site prints straight to your existing printer with the $1 fee charged to the guest, and for high-volume small-ticket shops that fee is 5% of the order instead of a flat dollar.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the fixed per-transaction fee matter so much for a coffee shop?

Because it does not scale down with the ticket. On a $5 latte a 15¢ fee is 3% of the sale before the percentage is added, so a published "2.6% + 15¢" is an effective 5.6% at that ticket size. On a $40 dinner the same 15¢ is 0.4%. Cafes should compare vendors on the fee at their own average ticket, not on the headline percentage.

What does Square for Restaurants cost a cafe?

Verified from Square's published pricing and NerdWallet's February 2026 review: the Free plan is $0 a month with in-person processing at 2.6% + 15¢ and online at 3.3% + 30¢; Plus is $49 per location at 2.5% + 15¢; Premium is $149 at 2.4% + 15¢. Hardware runs from a $59 reader to an $799–899 Register. All plans include an online ordering page.

What is Ginger's processing rate for a cafe?

Interchange-plus through Ginger's payment partners: the card networks' actual cost plus a small fixed margin, as low as 2% + 5¢. On a $5 latte that is about 15¢, roughly 3% effective. Because it is interchange-plus, the rate follows your card mix rather than being a single flat number.

Do I need a contract for a cafe POS?

Not with Square's plans or with Ginger, neither of which has a contract. Toast's paid plans typically carry a two- to three-year term. Clover's software is month-to-month, but its hardware promotions require a three-year commitment and processing may carry its own long-term contract, per NerdWallet's May 2026 review.

Is a free POS good enough for a coffee shop?

Often, yes. Both Square's Free plan and Ginger run a single-location cafe at $0 a month with online ordering included. The difference shows up in the processing line, which is where a cafe's money actually goes, and in hardware: Square's is bought, Ginger's is included for restaurants over $40,000 a month in card volume.
